And there’s no satisfaction,
Like the perfect number,
To discover everything around.

Superstarlight, where are you from?
You came out of the night, into my daylight.
Superstarlight, where are you going, so far out of sight?
All it takes is just one day,
To fall in love and find yourself at the start of the end.

So hush, little baby, don’t you cry.

This love,
Written in the stars,
From Venus to Mars.
Reflected in the lake.
In the palm of my hand,
And in the circles in the sand.
Across the land,
What would I do?
Who would I be without you?
How would I ever learn the meaning of this life,
Without you by my side?

https://soundcloud.com/redandblackmusic/snippet-06-conundrum

I know that we have a problem yet you don’t seem to care,
Cryptic conundrum that is getting us nowhere.
And when the temperature rises and the fire starts flare,
Going ‘round in circles, now really.
Why can’t we just be friends?
We can make amends.
Friends, just like the river bends,
Friends, ‘til the story ends,
And goes round and round again,
Back where it all began,
Conundrum!

¡A la luz de la luna mi hijo!

Diáspora Supersalsanova touches you on 27th March and we're releasing some sneak preview snippets over on our SoundCloud.

https://soundcloud.com/redandblackmusic/snippet-05-moonlight

When we’re lost in song and dance and strange romance,
This could be our last ever chance,
To lose ourselves in the mysteries of the night,
Before we surrender to the morning light.
Ever since that moment of that wild exotic dance,
I remember the lessons that I learned,
That there is no escaping what you feel inside,
When the moonlight touches you tonight.

And just dance with me.
The way it’s meant to be.
Let the music be your guiding force.
Let the rhythm drive away your lonely thoughts.
And I’ll be with you, until the very end.
‘Cause it’s true, our time is running out.

Review - Chilli Fiesta

3/1/2019

"Diáspora put on two chilli-championing sets at the Chilli Fiesta, West Dean College, August 2018. The annual festival features a host of national and international acts. The band was diverse, covering a wide selection of musical genres from Cuban to Nu Yorican, all of which were very popular songs that went down well with the 1,000 strong audience. Everyone really enjoyed the sets, the energy they put into their performances, and it’s clear to see their potential as they work so well together in a natural organic way. Off stage they were professional, quiet and polite. Always a bonus when working with the time and space constraints of an outdoor Summer festival.”

At Red & Black Music, Brazilian music has always been very close to the heart. In recognition of this, we offer Brazilian setups across 3 out of our 4 projects.

Diáspora welcomes back lead vocalist Pablo Raya!

22/2/2018

Picture
Diáspora is thrilled to welcome back salsa maverick Pablo Raya returning to deliver lead vocals on Diáspora's upcoming dance album. Many of you will remember Pablo's electric cameo performance with the 12-piece in @An Evening in Cuba at London's The Jazz Cafe last year.

Born in Montilla, Córdoba where he started singing at the age of five, Pablo is a singer, actor, dancer and performance artist. "High School Musical" produced by Stage Entertainment, was his first experience in show business. After his performance, the giant Disney Channel signed him, becoming part of the company’s TV productions and image of the channel in Spain.

His credits include “ and “Ay Carmela!” on musical theatre, and also international productions such as the teen phenomenon "Casi Angeles" for Argentine television, or the lead role in the science fiction feature film "Ozoner" directed by John Waterfall and co-produced for New York Film Academy.

Pablo has lived and worked in Madrid, New York and London and is very excited about making appearance on some lead numbers with the band.

Diáspora welcomes 2 new vocalists!!

1/1/2018

Diáspora is thrilled and excited to announce two talented artists joining its lineup to deliver lead vocals on the band's upcoming albums to be recorded this year. Diáspora has always championed a strong vocal following and 2018 is no exception. Salsera María Romero continues band's strong Latin roots, while Ana Teresa takes the vibe south of the border and into Brazil.
Picture

María Romero

María continues to fuel Diáspora's fiery flavours of Cuban salsa and Latin influences from son, rumba, mambo and cha-cha-chá to merengue, reggaeton, songo and timba and everything in between, in the band's upcoming dance album, taking cues from Guaguancó and Gozadera. ¡Sabrosura!

María is a professionally trained Spanish singer based in London. She recently graduated with distinction from a MMUS in music performance in London. María, who has been studying and performing music since the age of 9, is a tasteful and versatile singer  with a very wide vocal range. She is an experienced performer who has sung styles ranging from soul and jazz to traditional Spanish music, genres which make up her background and often influence her performances. She has also experience singing Latin music both live and in the studio, an environment where she particularly enjoys working.

Ana Teresa Correia

Ana Teresa adds cool cuts from the tropics to Diáspora's Latino fire. Specialising in the myriad of styles emerging from Brazil from Rio's Samba and laid back Bossa Nova to Bahia's Baião and Samba-Reggae, in an album blending Brazilian influences with jazz, funk and saudade.

Ana is a Portuguese singer and a graduated Masters in Popular Music Performance. A versatile vocalist with a wide vocal range, Ana has worked as a lead vocalist, backing vocalist integrating duos, full bands or even choirs with experience in studio recording and live performances. Specialising in soul, pop and funk music, Ana had also studied Jazz where Improvisation became an important approach to several musical styles including Bossa Nova.

Both vocalists trained together at ICMP - Institute Of Contemporary Music School in London. Ana Teresa adds Brazilian cool to María's Latino fire.

Review - Office Friendly

"We LOVED having the band and we have had some amazing feedback from our delegates.

Please pass on my thanks to the band as they were fantastic. They brought a superb energy to the night and their performance was at an incredible standard. I particularly liked that they gave us a special Brazilian set list to stay true to the styles of Latin Music across Latin America. The band were well mannered and I really enjoyed chatting to them and getting to know them.

Overall we all thought the band were incredible and if there is a suitable event to work with them again I will be in touch."

A Beginner's Guide To Latin American Music

A Beginner's Guide To Latin American MusicAt face value, Latin American styles of music may constitute a combination of African rhythms and European harmony. In reality, these combinations vary hugely from one Latin American culture to the next; depending on myriads of factors - economical, geographical, historical, political, social - the list is endless. For example, in the case of many Brazilian styles of music, there is a third major influence, that of the indigenous Indian cultures in South America. These different styles of music - like any other popular art music forms - have developed through time, so, with them, you get that temporal, as well as spatial, variation; traditional versus contemporary.

Latin-American Styles Developing Through Place

Picture
Thus, the timba-reggaeton that is happening in Cuba today is very different from the traditional music that was happening in sixteenth century West Africa, before the advent of colonialism. Latin American styles of music have not only developed through time, but they have developed through place; through upheavals attributed to those factors listed above. You can almost draw a map with lines, dates and progression routes drawn from one place to the next.

The Latin Influence

Picture
Yet this does not mean that there is no interaction between the timba-reggaeton in Cuba and the traditional music in West Africa, as 'opposite ends of the same scale', for they are mutually influential, the one informing the other. Contemporary salsa artists such as Marc Anthony or Paulo FG and Cuban Jazz artists such as Maraca or Klimax still look to the influence of African religious rituals as the foundations of their music. At the same time, artists originating from Africa and working internationally - Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Papa Wemba, Salif Keita - recognise the Latin influence in music as products of their own music, and cross-appropriate these in many songs.
