Dave Simpson - Kit, Timbales "Diáspora put on two chilli-championing sets at the Chilli Fiesta, West Dean College, August 2018. The annual festival features a host of national and international acts. The band was diverse, covering a wide selection of musical genres from Cuban to Nu Yorican, all of which were very popular songs that went down well with the 1,000 strong audience. Everyone really enjoyed the sets, the energy they put into their performances, and it’s clear to see their potential as they work so well together in a natural organic way. Off stage they were professional, quiet and polite. Always a bonus when working with the time and space constraints of an outdoor Summer festival.”

Brazil's music is a rich and diverse cultural heritage. The subcontinent includes a myriad of styles far too numerous to mention here, a treasure trove of musical gems. At Red & Black Music, Brazilian music has always been very close to the heart. In recognition of this, we offer Brazilian setups across 3 out of our 4 projects.
Rory Bossa Nova
Rory's Brazilian setup focuses on jazz. The trio grew our of Rory's love of Bossa Nova and Brazilian music. Blending the warm, breezy tones of the strummed acoustic guitar and the crisp, bass notes of the cajon with saxophone, flute and vocals, the trio interpret a diverse range of repertoire by Tom Jobim, Toquinho, Toninho Horta, Roberto Menescal, Noel Rosa, Milton Nascimento, Marcos Valle, Luis Bonfa, Jorge Ben Jor, Ivan Lins, Durval Ferreira and Chico Buarque as well as Rory's own compositions.

Many of you will remember Pablo's electric cameo performance with the 12-piece in @An Evening in Cuba at London's The Jazz Cafe last year.
Born in Montilla, Córdoba where he started singing at the age of five, Pablo is a singer, actor, dancer and performance artist. "High School Musical" produced by Stage Entertainment, was his first experience in show business. After his performance, the giant Disney Channel signed him, becoming part of the company’s TV productions and image of the channel in Spain. His credits include “ and “Ay Carmela!” on musical theatre, and also international productions such as the teen phenomenon "Casi Angeles" for Argentine television, or the lead role in the science fiction feature film "Ozoner" directed by John Waterfall and co-produced for New York Film Academy. Pablo has lived and worked in Madrid, New York and London and is very excited about making appearance on some lead numbers with the band. Final call for vocalists!

"We LOVED having the band and we have had some amazing feedback from our delegates.
Please pass on my thanks to the band as they were fantastic. They brought a superb energy to the night and their performance was at an incredible standard. I particularly liked that they gave us a special Brazilian set list to stay true to the styles of Latin Music across Latin America. The band were well mannered and I really enjoyed chatting to them and getting to know them. Overall we all thought the band were incredible and if there is a suitable event to work with them again I will be in touch." A Beginner's Guide To Latin American MusicA Beginner's Guide To Latin American MusicAt face value, Latin American styles of music may constitute a combination of African rhythms and European harmony. In reality, these combinations vary hugely from one Latin American culture to the next; depending on myriads of factors - economical, geographical, historical, political, social - the list is endless. For example, in the case of many Brazilian styles of music, there is a third major influence, that of the indigenous Indian cultures in South America. These different styles of music - like any other popular art music forms - have developed through time, so, with them, you get that temporal, as well as spatial, variation; traditional versus contemporary. Latin-American Styles Developing Through PlaceThus, the timba-reggaeton that is happening in Cuba today is very different from the traditional music that was happening in sixteenth century West Africa, before the advent of colonialism. Latin American styles of music have not only developed through time, but they have developed through place; through upheavals attributed to those factors listed above. You can almost draw a map with lines, dates and progression routes drawn from one place to the next. The Latin InfluenceYet this does not mean that there is no interaction between the timba-reggaeton in Cuba and the traditional music in West Africa, as 'opposite ends of the same scale', for they are mutually influential, the one informing the other. Contemporary salsa artists such as Marc Anthony or Paulo FG and Cuban Jazz artists such as Maraca or Klimax still look to the influence of African religious rituals as the foundations of their music. At the same time, artists originating from Africa and working internationally - Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Papa Wemba, Salif Keita - recognise the Latin influence in music as products of their own music, and cross-appropriate these in many songs. "We were very happy to have Diáspora in our wedding. The band played lovely music, with excellent spirit and charm. They clearly showed they are professional musicians…. they knew what they were doing!"
